Why?
Why wouldn’t you think the worst? After reading this article on global-warming naysayer, I’ve been asking that question time and time again.
I’ve heard the argument from apathetic people say, “Oh, they’ll figure something out. They’ll invent something to take care of this whole situation.” Look, my parents are in their 60’s. Since they were kids, they’ve been promised flying cars. They’re still waiting. And probably will live their entire lives without ever seeing the mass production of flying cars. Technology, as cutting edge and amazing as some things are, isn’t as fast as we think.
Look at the cell phone, they’ve added cameras, mp3 players, Internet, you name it. But as far as I can tell, my old cell phone from 1997 had the best reception and every phone I’ve owned since keeps getting worse and worse from reception standpoint. Why? The technology isn’t there apparently. And if it is, it isn’t the main feature from a sales perspective. So there is no reason for the cell phone industry to improve reception. They can cover up for the lousy service by adding…a camera! So I can take pixilated snapshots of the mundane! So progress can be slower than we hoped…
But to assume there isn’t a problem. That it’s all hokey mumbo-jumbo? Talk about infected with a terminal case of positivity! When it comes to the environment, the health of the population, the survival of a planet…you have to assume the worst. I could care less if global warming is a natural pattern or man-made. We need to address the issue and find a solution. There’s historic flooding in England and India. It rained almost everyday other day in June where I live in Houston. Tornadoes in Brooklyn. There’s something happening. And whether we’re the cause or just the victim of a natural cycle, we have to look at it with a negative slant.
We’ve ignored problems in the past with tragic results. People had warned us for decades, that’s right decades, that the levees in New Orleans needed work. But because they never broke before, people ignored the reality until it was too late. It wasn’t just in 2005 that people went. “Hey, the levees are not going to help” But the cost has always been high and it never was deemed necessary. Just like some people still say today about Global Warming.
We need to look at this with a negative mindset. To see the problems before they happen. To figure out what the worst-case scenario is and plan for it. But to ignore the issues and hope for the best, well…Good luck with that. Hope you have floaties and some sunscreen.
Or gills.
