Blog Action Day 2008 – Poverty

As part of Blog Action Day, I’m going to focus on poverty day and how negative thinking can be used to help.

We all would like poverty to simply disappear. It’s the global shame we all share that millions of people around the world live in severe poverty. And wishing won’t make it go away. We need to focus on what causes poverty worldwide. Poverty is not poor people. Poor is a subjective term. Compared to Bill Gates, I am poor. Compared to the homeless man who begs for spare change on the corner of the freeway I am rich. Poverty is a condition, a situation so perilous that basic human needs cannot be met. Food, shelter, water, medicine. And by thinking about what is the root cause, by analyzing the problem (which many people do not like to do) you can usually find a solution.

Overpopulation, crime, war, plagues, drought, unemployment… they all can create conditions that poverty can grow. By understanding how these events happen, we can slow poverty down considerably. By accepting the fact it exists and not ignoring it because it “brings me down”. There is no “bright side” of poverty. It’s an ugly part of the world.

We need to stop wars. Educate people on birth control. Fight climate change or at least our part of it. We need to care for our fellow man.

What are you doing to slow poverty in your world? Your country? Your town?

If you’re reading this, you’re already far better off than many people in the world. So do something…even if it’s just blogging about it.

    Cynthia,

Thanks for taking the time to comment on my blog. Having lived in New York City for a time and seeing how people react to homelessness there and here in Houston, it’s important we take the first step and recognize that poverty isn’t only in Africa, parts of Asia and central America. Poverty is here in America as well. We can make a difference, even if it is just small drop in the bucket. Without the first drop, the bucket doesn’t get filled.

Dear every thing what u said is right, but actual thing is that we all say we have to do this we have to do that, but we never start such things, we just comment on that and then forget what is the basic thing what we hve to do, so dear its right we should comment and aware every one what is the main reason for this n that, but on the other hand we should apply all these things from ourself and urself. regards, IMRAN
